Prior to forming his own consulting business, Steve had twenty years’ experience first as a researcher in plant molecular biology then R&D management, including strategy development, implementation and review.

Following a successful early research career in Australia and overseas, Steve was engaged by the NSW Department of Primary Industries to lead its biotechnology, plant and animal genetics programs including multiple collaborative R&D programs and the provision of policy advice on the commercial release of genetically modified crops in NSW. Dr Thomas held numerous executive positions at GRDC and provided leadership on all aspects of the organisation including R&D programs, commercial operations, IP management, systems development, IT, finance, strategy development and impact assessment.

Dr Thomas’ experience allows him to quickly assimilate new knowledge and to communicates easily with a range of stakeholders across agricultural value chains and research entities. Steve is an independent non-executive director for Riverine Plains Incorporated and holds a Master Public Administration (Executive), Monash University and a PhD and a Bachelor Agricultural Science (Hons, 1st class) from the University of Adelaide.
