Progress update

Rocky Point — District Impact Plan
Project What we’re doing Status Next Steps
Sustainable Milling Options for Rocky Point In light of the Rocky Point Mill planned closure, it is in the interests of approximately 45 growers and the cane industry generally, that cane continues to be grown in the district for the foreseeable future. In progress Investigate the transport logistics, biosecurity constraints and risk management re fire ants, and costs to transport cane to NSW.
Ratoon Stunting Disease (RSD) Consistent and focused disease management is needed to minimise RSD incidence, including disease-free planting material, elimination of volunteer cane and sterilisation of cutting equipment. Yield losses range from 5-60%; the largest losses are associated with moisture stress (drought). In progress Collaborate with UQ and Rocky Point Canegrowers on targeted RSD Management and sampling with growers.
Service Agreement in place with University of Queensland, due to finish in January 2027.
Best Farming Practices Engagement and adoption of technologies and practises. In progress Rocky Point pre-harvest (June) meeting – Focus on chemical use, soil and plant nutrition and application timing.
