Australian Sugar Industry Training – Development of factory training modules – Phase 3
Training within the Australian milling sector has been on an ad hoc basis, often developed at a mill or company without industry-wide competency standards nor an industry-wide training program matched to such competencies. Coupled with the transient nature of mill staff, this has created gaps in knowledge and understanding of mill operations. Training systems for the Australian sugar industry need to be developed to facilitate ‘any time’ operator training.
Objectives
This project will continue to develop training packages, mapped to Food, Beverage and Pharmaceutical – Sugar Milling (FBPSUG) competencies, which will encompass the training needs of the industry.
To improve the learning environment for Australian mill employees, modern technologies to enhance access and allow for a variety of pedagogies will be used.
Training will be developed that caters for those with limited literacy and numeracy levels, new employees, those current employees who need updated skills or for those changing positions in the mill.

Expected Outputs
The outputs from this project will be the on-line training modules on:
- Extraction
- Boilers
- Laboratory skills (part 1) – Collecting samples
- Laboratory methods (Part 1).
The courses will be available to the Australian sugar industry in the Australia Sugar Industry Training – Learning Management System (ASIT LMS). Each course will include:
- Training course information – diagrams, notes, photos, videos, and flowcharts.
- On-line quizzes – questions to highlight the important aspects of the training material, provided during the training course to enhance the user’s learning journey.
- Safety competency assessment – a random assessment from a pool of questions specific to the process.
- Knowledge competency assessment – a random assessment from a pool of questions that tests the knowledge transfer to each learner undertaking the course.
- Ability for mentors of each learner to be able to monitor the learner’s learning journey.
- Analytical capability for course data to the degree where it is possible to identify the answers each learner gave to every question.
A skills assessment checklist to complement the knowledge competency assessment.
Expected Outcomes
The Australian Sugar Industry Training Learning Management System (ASIT LMS) allows training to take place at any time.
The on-line training developed and available on the Australian Sugar Industry Training Learning Management System (ASIT LMS) will allow training to take place at any time. The operator training programs, mapped to national competencies, along with a structured assessment process ensure that all operators undertaking the courses have their knowledge competency assessed against a minimum industry standard. Users’ progress, quiz results, assessment and certificate records are updated and stored in ‘real time’
A competent workforce could be described as one made up of people who are able to analyse and understand the processes for which they are responsible. Ongoing development of a competent workforce will assist and reinforce the current competitive advantage of the Australian sugar industry.
