Sugar Research Australia (SRA) has launched a high-priority project to fast-track an alternative to imidacloprid for canegrub control, after the organisation’s Board met out of session to approve a special research initiative beyond its core pest management program.
SRA CEO Mick Bartlett said the move reflects the critical importance of finding a sustainable and effective long-term solution to canegrub, which continues to cause major economic losses across the Australian sugarcane industry.
“This is an extremely high priority for SRA, and one we are taking very seriously,” Mr Bartlett said. “The Board has endorsed our lead entomologist, Dr Kevin Powell, to proceed with field trials in Phase Two of his research, which focuses on identifying and testing viable alternatives as part of an integrated pest management solution.”
The new research program builds on years of foundational work led by Dr Powell and comes in response to increasing pressure from growers for solutions and guidance on controlling this damaging pest.
“Kevin and his team have been doing their absolute best with this work over the last couple of years,” Mr Bartlett said. “Now, we need to shift the dial. That’s why the Board and management have chosen to fast-track this program, backed by strong governance and targeted investment.”
The new initiative will run parallel to SRA’s existing pest control research portfolio, which includes improving application methods and sharing best-practice knowledge through productivity service and industry networks.
“We are deeply aware of the impact cane grubs are having on the crop right now,” Mr Bartlett said. “Growers have every right to expect answers and leadership, and that’s exactly what we are delivering. Our District Managers have already been holding workshops in key regions to provide immediate advice on available control methods and ensure good application practices are being followed.”
Mr Bartlett emphasised that while this new alternative will not be available overnight, the organisation has set a clear timeline.
“We hear growers loud and clear – they need assurance and progress, and they need to know SRA is on top of this. We are throwing everything we have at canegrubs, and we are backing our people and our science to deliver.”
Growers and millers will continue to receive updates as the program progresses, with SRA committed to transparency, responsiveness and practical outcomes.
